Project Lighthouse provides dozens of safe havens in downtown Detroit

DETROIT (WJBK) - The Las Vegas concert shooting is now known as the deadliest mass shooting in modern American History. That night, the lives of 58 people at a concert were stolen from a shooter in a high rise hotel across the street. More than 500 others were hurt that day, a day that filled people with absolute terror.

Here at home in Detroit, a program that can help in these sort of desperate situations, called Project Lighthouse, has been brought to the fore.

The Detroit Police Department and dozens of businesses in the city's Central Business District have partnered to launch Project Lighthouse, a program that will provide shelter, aid, safety and information for those in temporary need of assistance.

These places are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so if the worst should happen you can take cover and take care knowing there's a safe place for you and your family.

Each business, known as a lighthouse, has security personnel available 24 hours a day. You just have to look for the Project Lighthouse banner. Some of them include Campus Martius and the Renaissance Center.

We hope we never have to ask ourselves what to do in a situation like the one concertgoers encountered in Las Vegas, but it's best to be prepared.

What to do in an active shooter situation at an event

Project Lighthouse also has other resources available. They can help with car trouble, if you've gotten separated from friends or you have a safety concern.

It's no substitute for 911, though. If you feel you really are in trouble -- call 911.
