Senior center left without heat after water main break

A senior center in Detroit has been without heat for a week all because of a water main break.

They are doing their best to give seniors the help they need, while they wait on the city to fix problem.

St. Patrick Senior Center in midtown Detroit. Many seniors who come here call it a home away from home.

But since last week, some seniors are staying away

"I have arthritis and a slight bit of coldness makes it worse," Adolphus Peter Briscoe said.

"I have to keep coat on and I'm uncomfortable," said Minnie Davis.

The center's executive director says steam heat is used to keep the building warm and without it they say it's difficult to provide services.

Without heat, administrators say they are finding other ways to heat the building like using steam kettles.

Ovens and space heaters are being used right now to warm up the center.

Hoping to get some answers about why the repair is taking so long to complete, Coleman-Betts contacted FOX 2.

We reached out to the city of Detroit and Detroit Thermal and they tell Fox 2 in a joint statement that said:

"Detroit Water and Sewerage Department and Detroit Thermal are working closely together to correct the situation. The next course of action will be determined following test results.

"In the meantime, Detroit Thermal has reactivated the steam system to provide heat to the building and will keep crews onsite to manage water levels until repairs are completed."

Coleman-Betts said on Tuesday afternoon they have started feeling the heat.
