Stray bullet hits Northville man's home

NORTHVILLE TWP, Mich (WJBK) - Bill Sivl took a picture after a stray bullet shattered one of the windows at his front door on Crestview Circle in Northville.

"There was a bullet lying right on the ledge at the bottom of the window," Sivl says.

When Bill came home from work and realized what happened, he called police.

"One of the first things the officer said to me was, 'Well, you know what's right over here don't you?' The Michigan State Police have a firing range over here."

The gun range is located no more than a mile away on Seven Mile Road between Haggerty and Northville.

"This is not the first time this has happened. About a year ago, two homes in the subdivision had bullets and the Michigan State Police shut down the range for a number of months doing an investigation," Sivl says. "After several months, the word that came back was - yes the bullets came from their range, but they have taken corrective actions and they're now going to be using the range again."

FOX 2 spoke to Michigan State Police. They're working to figure out if the bullet came from their gun range or somewhere else.

"We'll close it down just to make sure - if by some impossible way - a round actually escaped from that range. With the replacement of a berm the height of that berm, pistol rounds coming from that range and traveling that distance is almost impossible physically," says Michigan State Police Lt. Michael Shaw. "We've got to determine if that round is not one of ours, work with Northville to determine where it came from to see if we got something else going on in that neighborhood."

Meanwhile, Bill is understandably concerned and hopes it doesn't happen again.

"If it was a day I wasn't working, most likely my dog Molly would've been laying right here, because she spends most of the day on the porch," says Sivl. "Beyond that, we have kids walking up and down the street all the time. ... It could've killed somebody."
