Toddler survives crash on I-94; four others dead
HARPER WOODS, Mich. (WJBK) - Authorities are investigating a fatal accident overnight on Interstate 94 in Harper Woods. Four people were killed in the crash and we're told the only survivor was a toddler in a car seat.
The crash happened in the eastbound lanes of I-94 just before the Eight Mile overpass. Michigan State Police say the driver of a 2006 Buick SUV was speeding in the left lane and lost control while passing other traffic, crossed three lanes of traffic and hit the bridge.
We're told the first impact occurred in Harper Woods, but the SUV rolled into St. Clair Shores. Police say four adults were killed immediately in the crash, and that none of them were wearing seat belts.
"Car just flew past us, doing 80. Next thing I knew it hit the wall, spinned outta control [sic]. My father and I stopped to see if everybody was okay but I was going back down towards the car I seen the two bodies and I had to go stop traffic because if I didn't stop traffic it wouldn't been another terrible sight" one witness told us.
Police have identified the victims as Doreal Rodgers, 20, of Detroit; Alesia Maddox, 20, of Detroit; Armonie Maddox, 18, of Detroit; and Ervin Johnson, 18, of Eastpointe.
Police say a 1-year-old child from Detroit was buckled into a car seat and sustained minor injuries.
Police say they're continuing to investigate the accident but, at this time, have no evidence of alcohol or narcotics being involved.
