An American tourist is facing federal charges after prosecutors say he went off-trail and suffered thermal burns in Yellowstone National Park.

Authorities said the victim fell between 40 and 50 feet.

The reddish-brown calves are born in late April and May and can keep up with the herd 2 to 3 hours after birth, according to the National Park Service.

Park rangers said over the Memorial Day weekend, visitors placed a newborn elk into their car and drove it to the local police station.

The park has seen an uptick in visitors hoping to get a glance of the cute calf.

Ammonium nitrate was used in 1995 at an attack on the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. The explosion killed 168 people and injured approximately 850.

The incident occurred on the evening of May 20 in the park's northeastern corner in Wyoming.

16-year-old Grace Smith says she was arrested at her Wyoming high school after she refused to wear a mask on school grounds. The teen says she's faced three separate two-day suspensions for not abiding by the school's mask mandate, and received $1,000 in trespassing fines for refusing to leave the campus.

Park officials confirmed the woman suffered serious burns between her feet and shoulders and the dog did not make it.
