Thursday's rush hour is taking place just as the teeth of a strong weather system moves through Southeastern Michigan this afternoon.

Thunderstorms on Wednesday night caused widespread damage in Metro Detroit, especially in lower Oakland County, where trees and power lines were brought down.

Temperatures take a slight step back today, but it will still be hot.

The first day of summer has arrived.

In addition to heavy downpours, winds reaching up to 60-70 mph and penny-sized hail are possible, according to the National weather service.

Living in a city can raise temperatures by 8 degrees. But adding trees can lower it by more than 10 degrees. Detroit has planted tens of thousands to compound the benefits.

Some thunderstorms are likely to pop up this afternoon, though severe weather isn't likely.

A short but strong storm ripped through Livingston County Monday night, causing severe damage to property in a neighborhood near Silver Lake.

The utility's vice president isn't worried if its grid can handle the heat - but they are prepared for the worst as brutal temperatures cook Southeast Michigan.

It'll be another steamy day with highs in the lower to mid 90s with feel like temperatures in the mid to upper 90s, if not closer to 100.
