Cass Tech students collect 700 cases of water for Flint
In Detroit Cass Tech is doing its part to help the people of Flint collecting hundreds of cases of water.
Students and staff say they can relate to the city's struggles.
"We are going to bring it out and put it on the truck and bring it to Flint," said student Allen Jones. "Some teachers will follow it and make sure it gets there safely."
The problems in Flint are hard to swallow, but at Cass Tech they are attempting to make it easier.
"I'm glad that I'm a part of bringing water to help them out," Jones said.
Nearly 700 cases of bottled water collected from a city that knows about water problems.
"We have a lot of things happening at DPS but we don't lack our basic needs," said Monica Jones, a Cass Tech counselor. "Water is one of the basic needs."
Teachers say they are always looking for teachable moments and the water crisis drive fits the bill.
"One student said we could be saving someone's life," said Monica Jones. "I said boom, you get it."
These students are volunteering their efforts for a cause greater than themselves. a rewarding sight for the staff.
"Other schools are going to continue on next week, like a snowball effect," Monica said.
The kids know with each bottle donated, that's one less chance of drinking flint's lead contaminated tap water.
FOX 2: "This water could save a life, what does that mean to you?"
"It means a great deal that I could help someone with their life," Allen said.
