Detroit woman shot in own driveway, second attack in three months

DETROIT (WJBK) - A Detroit woman was shot three times in her own driveway Monday morning in what she says is the second attack in six months.

The woman is still in the hospital but her mom, who asked not to be identified, spoke with FOX 2's Erika Erickson. She fears the same men are behind both attacks.

The first one happened in September. The Detroit mother says her 25-year-old daughter was robbed at gunpoint at an ATM on Gratiot. She had settled back into her life until four months later.

"Then Monday morning all hell breaks loose," she said. "When she got in her car, three men in masks casually walked out of our yard shooting at her and they just walked away."

She says her daughter  was on her way to testify Monday morning against 19-year-old Jonathan Cassanova Williams. He confessed to being the getaway driver during September's robbery after he was caught on surveillance video. But Williams was out on bond and was late for his court appearance.

"He was supposed to be in court at 8:00 or 8:30 am on the 8th. He didn't get there until 10:00," she said.

By 8:15 that morning, the woman had a bullet in her arm and stomach and a third through her back.

"It could've been so much worse. We're just so glad she's still here," she said she's afraid they're going to come back and finish the job.

Detroit police say Williams is in custody now but they haven't identified the shooter from Monday and are asking for tips from the public.

"We want to know why we didn't have an escort to the courthouse if he was out on bond and you knew."

Despite thanking thanking police as they continue to investigate, the family is tired of looking over their shoulder. They came back to their home to pack their belongings and leave for their own protection.

"If I have to leave then I'm leaving. I'll leave the state. No problem. In a heartbeat. We're not coming back here.  period."

With her daughter in the hospital, the mom is asking anyone to speak up. Even if they're afraid, the woman says somebody knows something and should come forward.
