Fort Street Bridge near I-75 in Detroit reopens
DETROIT, Mich. - A drawbridge near I-75 in Detroit has reopened about a year after work on the span was originally scheduled for completion.
The Detroit News reports that one lane in each direction on the nearly century-old Fort Street Bridge opened last week.
The drawbridge was closed for construction in May 2013. Michigan Department of Transportation spokeswoman Diane Cross says construction was slowed by the complexity of repairs and the need to accommodate river and bridge traffic.
The department is keeping one lane closed in each direction as workers finish roof repairs. Those lanes are expected to be open later this month.
It currently can take about 20 minutes for the bridge to go up or down. Eventually the bridge will be able to open in less than a minute.
