Walk-ins at some Detroit Public Schools

(WJBK) - Teachers and community members held a Day of Action at several Detroit schools Tuesday.

Members of the Detroit Federation of Teachers, those in the community and families of students staged a "walk-in" to get a firsthand look at the school conditions Detroit Public School teachers have been protesting for weeks. They want the schools returned to local control, the debt brought down and the conditions improved.

Parents at Cass Tech High School got a real-life look before the kids hit the classroom. Advocates for teachers lined the snowy and sleet-filled streets ahead of the opening bell uring parents to walk into school with their kids to see what they are dealing with.

One of the reasons the demonstrations are happening on this day is it coincides with the introduction of three Senate bills to the committee. The teachers say SEnate Bill 714 punishes them for taking action by striking or walking out, and states that teachers should be aware that their certificate could be suspended or revoked.

Count Day is tomorrow, February 10. There is rumor some students are planning to walk out that day in support of their teachers.
