Love thy neighbor: the story of Harold and Annie

DETROIT - A few years ago, Charlie LeDuff met Annie. She lives in an old home on Gratiot near the airport and refuses to leave her home. Annie was a recluse and shut in. She had no heat or water and was at the mercy of the elements and criminals. And she was lonely.

He also met Harold. He's lived next door to Annie for years and said he really never liked her much but she had one quality: she was human. In that way, he loves her.

After he told the story of Harold and Annie, you stepped up. Harold got her heat and water. He even bought her new windows and helped clean up her home.

Is she grateful? Harold thinks that, down inside, she is. But it doesn't matter to him if she is or isn't. He said he couldn't allow someone to live in the house if they could barely get up the steps.

Charlie wanted to know what had become of her in the three Christmases since they met. So he went down Gratiot, through the streets of Detroit, and met Harold and Annie, again.
